About Us

The Rance Group of companies comprises C.J. Rance (Pty) Ltd (Trading as Rance Timber) and Amathole Forestry Company (Pty) Ltd.

C.J. Rance (Pty) Ltd (Trading as Rance Timber), a saw milling company manufacturing premium quality South African pine sawn board products, has been in operation since 1910.

The company is committed to providing industry leading service and quality for its valued customers. It operates two sawmills:

Kubusi Sawmill - Large Log Sawmill
Sandile Sawmill - Small Log Sawmill

Log resource is supplied mainly from the 15 000 ha plantations owned and managed by its sister company, Amathole Forestry Company. These plantations are managed on a sustained yield basis according to best international and environmental practices.

The predominant species of pine grown include Pinus elliottii, Pinus patula and Pinus radiata.

The sawn board output is kiln-dried before being converted to a finished product for the market through various secondary processing activities, i.e. end-trimmed, finger-jointed, ripped, sized, PAR or moulded. CCA (Tanalith) treatment is also offered.

Rance Timber strives to build strong relationships with customers, supplying industry leading quality products within our premium range and industry leading service to ensure they get what they want when they want it. Our unique strategic stock system of core structural lines allows us to provide the customer with reduced lead-times and ensure fast turnaround time on orders. This provides our customers with the benefit of carrying reduced stocks and limiting stock outs.

The inherent quality of our log resource, grown in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, provides a superior board quality for the market and provides us the ability to extract high value grades that are sought after in the market. These premium products include:

  • Select / Furniture Grade
  • Clear Grade
  • SABS Structural Grade S5 and S7
  • Numerous mouldings including Flooring and Ribbed Decking machined from Select / Furniture Grade boards. Amongst other moulded lines.

Rance Timber has grown from humble beginnings as a one-man business in the earliest pioneering days of the timber industry in South Africa, to a successful, modern enterprise employing 1 400 people over both the forestry and sawmilling divisions. It has been the backbone of the timber industry in the Amathole region and continues to play a vital role in the socio-economic development of the rural economy and its people.

Harvesting & Transport

Rance Timber operates its own harvesting and transport of Pine, Eucalyptus and Wattle species. The Harvesting operations are motor manual and very labour intensive, where felling of trees, chocking of logs and log making is done manually. Chainsaw operators fell, de-branch and present trees infield ready for extraction to roadside. Extraction of the trees from infield is done using cables skidders, skylines and tractors. Once on roadside the trees are manually made into logs and stacked according to diameter and length by bell loggers. Once stacked according to specifications the logs are then ready for collection, which is done using logging trucks. The trucks are loaded using a combination of bell loggers and self-loading cranes. The logs are transported to the sawmills where they are offloaded onto the logdecks to be mechanically debarked and processed through the sawmills.

The Harvesting and transport operations take place in challenging terrain areas and almost all operations take place on narrow gravel roads. As a result weather and accessibility to both logs and sawmills is challenging for the operation. To overcome these challenges Rance Timber and AFC owns and operates its own road making and maintenance team to maintain and service all of the 1250km of forestry roads within the AFC estate to make the accessibility of logs possible as required for the saw milling operations.

The Technical Support function to this whole operation is done by the company's in house workshop. Rance Timber is a vertically integrated business allowing for maximum flexibility to give its customers valued service and quality.

AMATHOLE FORESTRY COMPANY

The state plantations in the Amathole region were bundled into a forestry package under Amathole Forestry Company (AFC), which owns the plantations and leases the plantation land from the state.

Rance Timber and its black economic empowerment partners were successful on public tender in purchasing a majority shareholding in AFC (Amathole Forestry Company) in 2005. However 40% of the state plantations in the Amathole region had been destroyed by runaway fires prior to privatisation, which resulted in disruption of log supplies. Thereafter AFC's primary focus was the stabilisation of the industry in the Amathole region, prevention of fires and the rehabilitation of the plantations. These goals have been achieved with great success - only 8% of the plantations have been destroyed by fire in the eleven years since privatisation and log supplies have been increasing every year.
