Educating disabled youth

In 2021 Amathole Forestry Company (“AFC”) again extended bursaries to children with special needs that are currently being educated at Carel Du Toit Trust and College Street Primary School as part of the AFC youth skills development program.

College Street Primary is officially a special school which caters for children whose primary diagnosis is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Carel du Toit Centre East London is the only one of its kind in the Eastern Cape, where children with hearing impairments are taught to speak through the maximum use of hearing technology.

AFC awarded bursaries to the value of R75,000 to scholars at these institutions to promote their educational development in a learning environment specifically designed to empower them and shape their minds for a positive future. Nelson Mandela once said, “Giving children a healthy start in life no matter where they are born, or circumstances of their birth is the moral obligation of every one of us”. AFC subscribes to this philosophy and is proud to be involved with this program.
