Treated Timber

Hazard Class (H3)

We have treatment facilities available to treat the timber with a CCA (Tanalith) chemical to protect the timber from insect attack and fungal attack. The treating process involves a vacuum pressure treatment that forces the CCA chemicals to penetrate to the core of the timber under high pressure. All treatment is done after kiln drying and we do not re-dry after treatment. The treatment process and the management thereof is done strictly in accordance with the SANS 1288:2013 specifications.

Hazard Class (H3):

Timber destined for exterior use above the ground (no ground contact), i.e.: fencing slats, garden furniture, sun deck components, balustrades, walkways, trellis, etc.

A common misconception on the treatment of timber is that sealing timber with a protective coating offers the same protection as pressure treatment. A sealer only assists with protecting the timber against weathering and because it does not penetrate to the core of the board, it does not protect against insect and fungal attack. It is recommended that a CCA treated board is also sealed or coated to protect it against weathering.

Pine, being a softwood, retains this treatment chemical through to the core of each board. This is unlike a hardwood product that generally does not absorb or retain a treatment chemical. Some hardwoods can also only retain a chemical in the sapwood of the board and not through to is core or heartwood.
